Hip Resurfacing is an alternative to conventional Total Hip Replacement (THR) and it is used to manage established arthritis and hip pain in younger or athletic patients. It is a bone preserving technique and utilises an implant that has exceptional wear, impact and dislocation resistance, allowing patients to return to high levels of activity
In conventional total hip replacement (THR) bone preparation, both the femoral head and most of the neck (coloured green) is removed. In comparison, hip resurfacing removes very little of the native bone, removing just the damaged cartilage and a small amount of the underlying hardened bone.

Near natural loading of bone allows more natural function of the hip following resurfacing.
These modern components offer options for younger, active, athletic men and women of all shapes and sizes
OA, or wear and tear of the cartilage of the hip usually occurs in patients in their 70's but sometimes occurs in younger and often more active patients. A standard total hip replacement (or Arthroplasty) can relieve hip pain and give back function but it is less suitable in younger patients who are more active, have higher demanding jobs or are athletic and participate in sports.
We are very happy to discuss with you what will work for you as a person, we can offer a pain blocking technique that can give up to 2 years of pain relief - that is not a steroid injection! This can offer a person the option to potentially be pain free whilst they weigh up their options or get other health/recovery issues resolved.
If, after a trial of conservative treatment, you still have unacceptable levels of hip pain and poor function, hip replacement may be the only option available to you. If you are older and have lower activity levels then a standard total hip replacement (THR) is a good option, but a standard THR will be limiting if you are young and very active. A standard THR is also likely to fail early in the younger active or athletic patient.
The preservation of bone and the geometry of the Hip Resurfacing creates a hip replacement which functions closer to the natural hip than a standard THR. This allows a natural feeling joint that patients can comfortably walk, work, run and play sports on, even at a professional level. For example, after hip resurfacing, Andy Murray and George Burgess are back to playing top level tennis and rugby respectively.
With very low wear it is expected that Hip Resurfacing implants could last several decades, and possible the life of the patient.
We can answer your questions, discuss your personal circumstances and what you as a person need.
